Bill In Congress Would Convert Churches Into Partisan Political Machines

Many already are, but this would make it explicitly allowed - everywhere...

From Op-Ed News:

This week, the House of Representatives has seen the quiet introduction of legislation that, if signed into law, would cast aside a law that has for generations kept churches, and other tax-exempt organizations, separate from partisan political campaigns for public office. The bill, H.R. 3600, was introduced by Republican Walter Jones and Democrat Emanuel Cleaver.

The purpose of the bill is to eliminate what is known as the 1954 Johnson Amendment – a law that forbids tax exempt organizations from supporting specific candidates for public office. These organizations, including churches, remain free to promote positions on political issues. They also can choose to promote candidates for public office – if only they will give up their tax exempt status.

Churches and other organizations with tax exempt status are essentially being supported by the federal government. They’re given charters with the special privilege of avoiding paying taxes. It’s in return for this significant financial privilege that tax-exempt organizations relinquish their right to participate in partisan political campaigns.

H.R. 3600, if passed, will end this requirement, and allow churches and other tax-exempt organizations to have their cake and eat it, too. They’ll still get government support, and at the same time funnel money and organizational resources to political candidates... More here.

Ugh!!! Dang! Many of them do enough harm already, brainwashing their congregations with right-wing guff, complete opposite of what their supposed leader, JC would say and do.

Exactly! Hey, did we ever discuss a Margaret Atwood novel called "The Handmaiden's Tale"?

Yes, you recommended the novel after I'd seen the movie. I have it on my pending pile of books bought on ebay recently (still struggling slowly through "Dune" - sigh! )

No doubt we'll have at least one or two power outages this winter when I'll catch up. ;-)
