Bad News: Many of Your Constitutional Rights are GONE. Or Soon Will Be.

The Senate has rejected the Udall Amendment to the Defense Appropriations Bill, which would have banned indefinite detention of American citizens by the military, without so much as any charges being filed, without the right to legal counsel, or trial, a hearing, bail, etc. You can be picked up at your house, the grocery store, Canada, wherever you happen to be in the world. Even the national security leadership is opposed to this! Why now? Why the rush (and the sneaky insertion) to get this into law NOW? This bill was drafted in secret by Levin (D-MI) and McCain (R-AZ), and passed in a closed-door committee meeting - with not even one hearing. For those of you who still think you live in a democracy, you may want to reconsider.

This is from the ACLU:
Yesterday the Senate voted 37-61 to reject an important amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that would have removed harmful provisions authorizing the U.S. military to pick up and imprison without charge or trial civilians, including American citizens, anywhere in the world. The amendment offered by Sen. Mark Udall (D-Colo.), would have replaced those provisions with a requirement for an orderly congressional review of detention power.

The Secretary of Defense, the Director of National Intelligence, the Director of the FBI and the head of the Justice Department’s National Security Division have all said that the indefinite detention provisions in the NDAA are harmful and counterproductive, and the White House has issued a veto threat over the provisions.

We’re disappointed that, despite robust opposition to the harmful detention legislation from virtually the entire national security leadership of the government, the Senate said ‘no’ to the Udall amendment and ‘yes’ to indefinite detention without charge or trial.

The next opportunity to remove the harmful detention provisions from the bill will be when House and Senate conferees meet in conference committee next week.

If the conference committee fails to remove the detention provisions, President Obama should follow through with his veto threat. Today’s vote on the Udall amendment shows there’s more than enough opposition to these provisions to sustain a veto. Stay tuned for more information.

JG,
It's becoming more concerning when you CAN'T smell something!

This bill is so reminiscent of Nazism I can't take it.
Co-sponsor Levin is simply a stupid asshole who evidently forgets, although we're all reminded over and over we're NEVER supposed to forget! (Something about conditions in Germany, pre-World War II!) So he thinks he gets a pass for being stupid AND being a full of shit partisan bigot? He thinks he's a patriot? To which country? To which time period?

John McCain on the other hand is an anachronistic simpleton, certifiably insane to the point of mind-numbing existence who belongs in the Reich.
You'd think after all he went through he, if no one else who pretends to be Republican (but is really a fascist and/or National Socialist in disguise) would appreciate that "damn piece of paper."
I think I may start an online collection to see if we can get him a permanent room back at the Hanoi Hilton. I know they say it's no longer in existence but the say the same thing about Santa and we all know Santa's real!

The man makes me ashamed I ever played soldier.

If he's what America now stands for, I have to rethink patriotism.

John McCain...the Plumber's Helper (offense intended, Joe!)

Carl Levin...POS!

61 Republicans and Traitorous Democrats...complete sold out assholes.

House Members who voted for and will vote for it...soon to be extinct.

A President who doesn't veto this...well, let's just say the pre election posters with the moustache were probably correct.

Fuck 'em all!

Another thought.

Since we have learned the Fed gave nearly 7.7 TRILLION secretly to help bail out banks and 1 or 2 of us are pissed, we now learn that the banks of the world, starting in Europe may be ready to roll over and play dead so that Uncle Barry and Aunt Hank will covertly shove more trillions of American money to bail them out.

So the bill to allow the military (U.S. and National Police) to arrest and detain ANYONE who they think may have illegally stubbed their toe, has been crafted in advance to prevent protests about us 99%ers who will riot when the truth comes out.

Nice! Pass a bill so you can arrest American when they protest because the government screws them even bigger again and again.
There's a word for that. There's even precedent (See Germany, 1930s).

Sharon Angle had the right idea, just the wrong people.

P.S. See you guys in Buchenwald West!

FT, reserving a room at your local or area detention center already? Did you request a room with a view?

Who do I speak to about vegetarian meals? Can we request a top bunk?

JG,
I'm pretty sure I'm safe. After all, I'm not a whistle blower!
Besides, everyone knows those camps, er...detention centers don't really exist!

Anna,
I'm really, really hoping they'll be co-ed!(Wink Wink, Nudge Nudge, Say no more!)

Gotta start re-watching all those cool "detainment" movies...like Cool Hand Luke, most of James Cagney and George Raft, Edward G. Robinson, etc.

You know, kinda like an intro course to the future of America!

For all your veterinarian desires, just call the front desk. And maybe you can redeem your frequent flier miles for that top bunk you're coveting...

Make that "vegetarian" desires. Doubt, although I could be wrong, that you prefer veterinarians.

All...

Things are coming to a head, and it's swirling toward us really fast. I doubt whether we'll have an election next fall -- as if it really makes any difference -- because Europe's ready to collapse economically and we surely won't be far behind. They're lining up all their resources, legal and otherwise, 'cause they know everything's surely going to unravel and they plan to be ready.

As Hedges accurately pointed out, we're transitioning from Huxley's futuristic dystopia to Orwell's police state. "Huxley saw the first stage of our enslavement. Orwell saw the second."

Tighten your seat belt. We're in for a bumpy ride.
